The Hispanic Heritage Organization is hosting the annual Hispanic Heritage 2008 Essay Contest.  This year’s essay topic is “How I would develop a plan for immigration.”  Essays may be written in English or Spanish.  The contest is open to all students in the State of Illinois from grades 4 through 12 and college and adult education students.  Seventeen winners will be selected.  Entries must be submitted on or before Monday, June 30th.  Winners will be announced on Friday, September 5th during the Opening Ceremony at the Palmer House Hilton.  For more information or an entry form, call At Your Service Personnel Consulting, Inc. at (312) 819-1502.

 

JULY 1

June was Men’s Health Month and current news has focused on recently released evidence that the condition of a man’s heart can be closely connected to Erectile Dysfunction (ED).  This condition may be a primary indicator to cardiovascular heart disease that was not previously recognized by the medical community.  This new data will be the focus of a FREE community educational program on Tuesday July 1st beginning at 6:30PM in the Palos Heights Community Center, 6601 W. 127th St. in Palos Heights.  This FREE community health seminar is being sponsored by Heart Care Centers of Illinois.  The seminar will cover the connection between Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). Insight into appropriate next steps and treatment options for both CHD and ED will be discussed by leading physicians, Doctors Thomas Kason and James Sylora. The program stresses the need to contact a cardiologist and/or urologist if you or your partner experience problems with CHD and ED. This important talk is FREE and open to the public. Join the American Disabilities Association in commemorating the 18th anniversary of the signing of the American with Disabilities Act on July 15th from 10AM to 3PM at the James R. The Marshall Family Golf Outing for Misericordia will take place on Saturday, July 26th at the Indiana Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale, IL.  Misericordia is a Chicago-based organization which provides much more than housing for approximately 650 mentally and physically disabled children and adults.  Misericordia (www.misericordia.com) is a loving community which provides for the educational, physical, spiritual, occupational and social needs of its residents.  As operational costs continue to rise and government support is declining, it is obvious that funds must come from other sources.  Currently, we are collecting donations to be used as raffle/silent auction gifts and giveaways.  We are also looking for hole sponsors.  Please visit www.marshallfamilygolf.com for more information.  Registration is now being taken - slots are limited.  Registration must be received by July 6th.  Don't miss the fun!

 

JULY 31

Artists United For Cures is a registered non-profit organization whose purpose is to raise funds to aid in the research, treatment and cure of many societal ailments (Cancer, MS, Lupus, AIDS, etc.); provide vouchers to assist the non-insured and the under-insured obtain medicine needed for their treatment; and provide assistance in paying medical bills of the non-insured and under-insured so that they are non denied treatment.  Our first fundraising event is a live performance featuring local Chicago talent on July 31st from 8PM to 12AM at the Cubby Bear, 1059 W. Addison in Chicago, and the proceeds will benefit the Susan G. AUGUST 15 – 17

The 2008 Chicago Air and Water Show celebrates 50 years with three days of daredevil thrills in the air and on the water at North Avenue Beach and along Chicago’s magnificent lakefront August 15th to 17th.  The 50th Annual Chicago Air & Water Show presented by Shell Oil Products U.S. and the City of Chicago promises to be like no other.  For the first time there will be a Friday night show and evening concert at North Avenue Beach.  The U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team will headline.  The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will kick-off the festivities at 3PM on Friday, August 15th, which a free concert immediately following at the North Avenue Beach Boat House.  The night show will conclude at 9PM with a spectacular fireworks display.  On Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th, the water show begins at 9AM and the air show runs from 11AM to 4PM both days.  Fore more information, call the Mayor’s Office of Special Events at (312) 744-3315 or visit www.chicagoairandwatershow.us.

 

AUGUST 18

Elgin Community College’s child care center will begin offering evening child care and a homework club starting Monday, August 18th.  The new services allow ECC students to have a safe, convenient and dependable child care option while attending evening classes. The service also is open to ECC employees.  Registration is underway to enroll in the new services, which will be held from 5 to 9PM, Monday through Thursday.  Evening child care will be open to children ages 3 to 6, and activities will involve arts, crafts, stories and songs.  A light snack also will be provided at the child care center, located in Room 150 in the college’s Health and Business Technology Center on the Main Campus, at 1700 Spartan Drive in Elgin.  The homework club will be open to children ages 6 to 12. The center will provide a quiet, structured environment for those children to do their homework.  Upon registration, parents have the option of dropping their child into the center at any time or scheduling a regular time to drop off or pick up their child.  This option provides students the convenience of using the college’s evening program when they need it most.  The cost of the services is $4.50 per hour, per child. In addition to the hourly fee, there is either a $50 registration fee for drop-in service or $20 registration fee for scheduled care.  The service ends Thursday, December 11th.  The child care center also offers daytime child care for infants 6 weeks to 2 years old and for children ages 2 to 5.  For more information about ECC’s child care program or to register, call (847) 214-7376 or visit www.elgin.edu/childcare.

 

SEPTEMBER 27

Midtown Athletic Club Palatine will host its 6th Annual 5K Run & Walk on Saturday, September 27th along with a complimentary training program for first time 5K-ers entitled “Run Your First 5K.”  Training sessions will be held on eight consecutive Saturdays leading up to the event and conducted by Midtown certified personal trainers.  The 3.1-mile course will start and finish at Midtown Athletic Club Palatine, 1760 North Hicks Rd., and wind throughout the Deer Grove East Forest Preserve. WILBUR WRIGHT COLLEGE

Interested in attending Wilbur Wright College during the fall semester? Make that first step by taking one of the free placement tests this summer.  The tests for the fall semester, which begins August 25th, are being offered at 10:45AM on Mondays, 5:45PM on Tuesdays and 10:45AM on Saturdays at the college, 4300 N. H.O.P.E. LES TURNER ALS FOUNDATION

BLUE GARGOYLE YOUTH TUTORING PROGRAM

VACATION EDUCATION FOR TEACHERS

Teachers have only a few short weeks in the summer to add to their skills and increase their qualifications. Vacation Education, offered by Governors State University, provides a variety of graduate education courses at convenient times for educators.  Vacation Education classes begin after the end of the regular school year in June and finish before the beginning of the new school year in August. Classes are offered Monday through Thursday. Because of the convenient scheduling, educators can attend two of these three-hour graduate level courses, gain knowledge, and still have time for the best days of summer.  Vacation Education credits may apply to recertification requirements, professional development goals, or toward a master’s degree. Enrollment in a master’s study program is not required for participation in Vacation Education.
